Nikki Macpherson TherapyCounsellor and Psychotherapist in Kingston Upon Thames

Psychotherapy and Counselling provide the time and safe space for you to share and explore whatever you wish in confidence.

Life can bring us many challenges and we rarely take the time and space to reflect on them. You may be feeling overwhelmed, or experiencing depression or anxiety; you may have a specific problem such as bereavement, relationship difficulties, or a personal trauma; or maybe you don't know what the problem is but feel things are not quite right. Working together we can gain greater insight and understanding of your experience; exploring your situation and what it means for you. I will support you to identify and try out different choices you might want to make.

I will pay attention to the things that work for you as much as to the things that trouble you. I believe that therapy offers unique opportunities for a person to get in touch with their strengths, confidence and resilience, and in so doing equip them to deal with any challenges facing them. Taking the opportunity to talk to someone outside your situation may enable you to see things more clearly and to support you to find ways to make new choices.

I am passionate about a relationally-focussed, holistic approach to psychotherapy and work predominantly from an embodied relational gestalt stance. I believe that the therapeutic relationship we co-create is of fundamental importance in facilitating exploration and change; I attempt to be as flexible and supportive as possible in facilitating this. The most important thing when looking for a therapist therefore, is to find someone that you feel comfortable with and are able to relate to. Therapy may not be easy, but I will support you to explore what is troubling you at your pace. I believe in being authentic with clients and seek to share my responses to what I hear.

Generally I see counselling as a shorter term process working with a specific focus. Psychotherapy works at greater depth enabling you to explore, for example, the underlying patterns of relating that you have developed and how these occur in your current life. You may wish to find deeper meaning in how you exist in the world. This awareness I see as key in making long term changes in the way you live your life in the world.

In essence I see psychotherapy and counselling as a process of meaning making, and building resilience. Through increased awareness, choicefulness in how you live your life in the present and future emerges.
